This week, I just decided I was going to go for it and install linux onto a home pc for the first time in...EVER. Screw you Microsoft! Since I got the basics working I'v ehad no problems, I've been browsing the interwebs, chatting on instant messengers irc, watching videos and playing mp3s nea probs.
Being a beginner to installing linux (although I used it a fair bit at uni), I went for what is commonly regarded as the most user friendly - Ubuntu.I only had two problems to begin with:
1. No linux driver for sound card
2. No linux driver for wireless network card
I dealt with problem 1. by removing the offending sound card and switching on the motherboard sound device. Result: no problems it works!
Problem 2 was a little more difficult and almost caused me to give up. I had to spend a while looking at forums and trying stuff, but I found out that I could use a software package which basically converts windows wireless drivers into linux. It is called ndiswrapper.
It seems like the only problem the average person would have when setting up ubuntu is when it comes to component manufacturers not making drivers for unix type operating systems. This isn't a problem when you buy a complete system with linux installed from a hardware vendor like dell.
So next time you buy a computer get ubuntu and NOT winblows!

Nice.
I found the ALSA compatibility lists good when I was buying a sound card. But it sounds like you're pretty happy already.
I still have a Windows 98 partition on my PC, but I think there's nothing left I need it for.

mandriva
ive used mandriva ever since it started out as mandrake. And i have used numerous sound cards pci/isa/onboard and wireless cards without any driver problems. The funny thing was that about half of the stuff that worked under linux without having to search for drivers i had to hunt and find drivers for windows. specifically most of my sound cards ?? To me it seams even though ubunto has a lot of support it lacks the drivers that some other distros like red hat and mandriva have.November 22 2010, 13:45:13 UTC 1 year ago
